Force Shopify customer account logins

All Shopify merchants can now opt-in to an additional security feature that requires customers to log in to their Shopify customer account before gaining access to their Recharge customer portal. 

Previously this setting was only available based on request and was called `Force customer portal accounts (Shopify - Recharge Checkout only)`. We have renamed it to improve clarity and to account for all Shopify merchants.

Next time you visit your customer portal settings, if your customer portal location is set to `Embedded in platform storefront` you will have the option to enable the `Force Shopify customer account logins` setting under your customer portal control settings. 

How does it work?

  • This setting is disabled by default.
  • When this feature is enabled, we will continue to generate the customer portal URL with the security token as we do today. However, to access the customer portal, the customer will be required to log in to their Shopify account.

    • If the customer is already logged into their Shopify account, they will be redirected to the customer portal.
    • If the customer is not logged in, they will be required to log in before being able to access the customer portal.
    • If the customer does not have a Shopify account, they will be required to create one and log in before being able to access the customer portal. 
  • Theme Engine out of the box support will be available in a future release. In the meantime, Theme Engine users can contact Recharge Support to get the files they need to use this feature. 
  • Note: It is important to ensure your Shopify account settings are set to optional or required.

Cart attributes now supported with Shopify Checkout!

All merchants using Recharge with Shopify Checkout Integration (SCI) now have the ability to capture/manage cart attributes (also referred to as ‘order attributes’). 

Cart attributes are custom form fields that merchants can use to request a variety of information from customers during checkout. With Recharge, merchants can now: 

  • View, add, or edit cart attributes in the Recharge merchant portal 
  • let Recharge ensure that the updated cart attributes make their way into the subscription contract in Shopify and therefore, the future recurring orders. 

Note: To fully utilize this feature with Recharge, merchants must enable cart attributes in their Shopify storefront theme as well.

RechargeSMS: Redesigned Onboarding Experience!

RechargeSMS has a completely redesigned onboarding experience, featuring a streamlined walkthrough process, SMS status indicators, and UI elements built to make activation guided, friendly and fast.

What’s new?

  • Short and sweet — We’ve reduced the process to 2 main stages + one-click activation
    • Enable Features, Format Products, & Activation
  • New UI Element — A guiding companion to get merchants through onboarding (and more - coming soon 😉)
    • Explains each step and reinforces with feedback
  • New Status Indicator (red, yellow, green)
    The new Messaging Limited (yellow) status will inform merchants that they only have a test segment on - they need to turn on their opt-in to activate, offering more clarity on service status.

How does it work?

  • When a merchant installs RechargeSMS, they will be greeted by a new UI element that sits at the bottom left of the screen, inside the sidenav. They can move through onboarding by clicking the CTA at the bottom.
  • They can enable our recommended features with just a click or explore on their own.
  • Merchants will be prompted to import their products and format titles.
  • Lastly, they can either turn on their opt-in to activate SMS or start with a test segment first.
    • RCS and SCI stores at this stage see slightly different UI

Shopify 2.0 Subscription Widget is now in open Beta


Merchants looking to use a Shopify 2.0 theme can now install or upgrade to our new Shopify 2.0 Subscription Widget.


Feature highlights 

  • Quick and easy setup 
  • The ability to drag and drop the position of the widget 
  • Leverages Shopify's app block sections
  • No coding required 
  • If you are upgrading you can install it on an unpublished 2.0 theme to avoid any downtime

Availability

  • Merchants using the Shopify Checkout integration or the Migrated Shopify Checkout Integration
  • You can upgrade as soon as you have an unpublished or published 2.0 theme installed on your Shopify store.

Cart Notes now available with Shopify Checkout Integration

All merchants using Recharge with Shopify Checkout Integration now have the ability to capture/manage cart notes (custom free form text field) for an order and add it to the customer's subscription contract in Shopify. 

Cart notes can be

  • added by a customer in their cart before checkout OR
  • viewed, added, or edited by the merchant through the Recharge merchant portal
This field can be used flexibly in a variety of scenarios such as:
  • packaging or delivery instructions
  • feedback on experience
  • special instructions / additional information
  • and much more!
Note: To fully utilize this feature with Recharge, you must enable ‘cart notes’ in your Shopify portal as well.

Cart notes are also supported for merchants using Recharge Checkout with Shopify or BigCommerce.

Multiple payment methods support is coming to your store!

All merchants using Recharge will soon be able to let their customers manage multiple payment methods for their account.This feature enables several enhancements such as:
  • Streamlined UX to let customers view/add unique payment methods per subscription such as PayPal, Apple Pay, Credit cards, etc.
  • Ability to assign a payment method to a specific address
  • Reduce friction by automatically displaying payment type and the last 4 digits of payment card
  • An improved UI experience to the shipping, billing, and subscription pages on the Recharge customer portal
At launch, the feature can be accessed through:
  • Merchant portal for admins
  • Customer portal standard themes (Novum & Prima) and custom themes built on the Theme Engine (v4.0.0 or above)
IMPORTANT: This feature is being rolled out in phases and will soon be available with your store if not already enabled.

RechargeSMS: Cart Opt-in for Shopify Checkout

RechargeSMS is now available for Shopify Checkout! Merchants using Shopify Checkout can now deploy a fully customizable opt-in widget on their cart page, allowing subscribers to opt-in to transactional SMS messages in the purchasing journey.

What's new?

  • A cart opt-in card has been added to the RechargeSMS dashboard for merchants on Shopify Checkout. 
  • After clicking, the cart opt-in card will prompt merchants to enable the cart opt-in and customize the tool. 
  • Once the opt-in has been enabled, RechargeSMS will automatically inject the widget into the merchant’s Shopify theme based on the default placement and colors chosen in the customization phase. 
  • Should a merchant wish to manually change the placement or coloring, a walkthrough video has been created to provide instruction on implementation.

Please note: Merchants who have converted, or are in the process of converting from Recharge Checkout to Shopify Checkout will no longer be able to display the SMS opt-in on their checkout page, and will have to deploy the cart opt-in for their store. 

Current subscribers and tool functionality will not be affected with this launch. The only functionality changing will be where customers can opt-in, in the purchase journey.

RechargeSMS: New Landing Page Opt-in Widget

RechargeSMS now has the ability to generate a landing page for customer opt-in! Creating a landing page easily allows for existing subscribers to opt-in to transactional messages outside of the checkout flow and via email & SMS.   

What’s new?

  • A landing page opt-in card has been added to the RechargeSMS dashboard.
  • Once clicked, the landing page card will prompt merchants to customize their branding information (Shop Name / Logo / Primary Color). 
  • The card also provides an interactive UI for merchants to preview and customize.

How does it work?

Merchants:

  • Once branding information has been finalized, the customizations produce a dynamic code snippet (HTML/CSS/JS) generated after the merchant clicks “Save”.
  • Merchants are then directed to create a new page in the Shopify store settings where the custom script is pasted after selecting the 'Show HTML' button.
  • After saving, the widget is then displayed for subscribers to interact with.

Subscribers:

  • On the widget page, subscriber’s can enter the email associated with their subscription as well as a phone number.
  • Completing the form will prompt:

    • A text message with a validation code to ensure the number belongs to them.
    • An email (the one entered) an authorization URL to authenticate the changes.

Accounts and Permissions now available

Store owners can now control what their team members can access. This feature will help reduce errors & business risk and increase productivity by removing store owners as bottlenecks.  

Recharge permissions allows store owners to control account permissions at two critical points:
  1. Default new account permissions: Because both Shopify and BigCommerce allow platform users to create accounts in Recharge simply by visiting the app, Recharge permissions allows store owners to set a default level of permissions for all new accounts. That way, merchants can specify that all new accounts will only receive access to the "Customers" and "Orders" sections, for example.
  2. Existing account permissions: Store owners are able to view and edit the permissions of any existing user's store account--even users who have only ever accessed Recharge from Shopify.

How do permissions work? 

Permissions are used to determine which sections of the app a user can view. Users will only see sections of the application to which they have access. If they attempt to navigate to a section of the app that they do not have permission to see, they'll see an "Access denied" message instead of the page. These permissions are set at the account level, so a user with access to multiple stores can have different permissions for each individual store as determined by the store's owner.
